Thing 23

I cant believe I am finally done! I have learned so many new concepts and tools to use in my classroom. One of my favorite discoveries in this journey was researching the wikis. I plan to implement several of the tools I learned in my classroom this fall.
One of the only problems I encountered while participating in this project was the inability to download my Photostory movie.

Thing 22

Implementing Ning into the high school would be an effective tool help open the lines of communication within the English department and the school environment. Teachers and administrators would be able to answer questions and concerns that may arise in a non-threatening matter. In order for all shareholders to effectively communicate with each other their needs to be another form of communication to address all staff needs and questions.

Thing 21

I enjoyed using Photostory to create this book trailer. One of my only concerns is the inability to access the Photostory software on all computers to create projects. Also the difficulty of saving and downloading the movie can be an issue.

I am still waiting for my Photostory to download.

Thing 20

The ability to use TeacherTube in the classroom is an valuable tool to help reinforce concepts taught in the classroom. The video I choose to embed is on postings in cyberspace. Students must understand how what he/she uploads into cyberspace is permanent and come back to haunt them when they least expect it.

Thing 19

One of the my favorite sites I found on Web 2.0 awards was Urbanspoon. The web page included reviews, pictures, and menus on local restaurants.
One of the best features of Web 2.0 is the top web sites are condensed into one site. The ability to find sites that can be implemented into the classroom in one web page, helps teachers add valid sites to differentiate their instruction.

Thing 18

Disadvantages of online productivity documents

  • Students may have a difficult time navigating the software
  • Not all native languages are represented on the site
  • There is a 10Mb limit for attachments on the site

Advantages of online productivity documents

  • The software can be used in Windows and Mac
  • Microsoft Access files can be integrated into the site
  • Multiple users may download the software

Thing 17

I enjoyed creating my own search engine on the Rollyo site. After looking at the examples on the site I was able to condense many of my favorites to one page. The ability to include all of my sites to one page keeps me from searching all over the Internet for one particular web page.

Thing 16

After researching the different examples of wikis used in the classroom, I plan to create one this school year. The first wiki will include discussion questions for the novels that we will read in English class. Students will be required to answer the discussion questions and comment on another classmates posting. Eventually, I would create one for the parents to ask questions and communicate with each other on news and events at the high school.

Thing 15

Library 2.0 will change the way patrons access information. Instead of physically visiting the library to use the resources provided, the patron will be able to access the resources in cyberspace. Patrons will also be able to access services on their time. Instead of trying to rush to the library before it closes to obtain a book, movie or a journal for research, users will be able to gain access to the library databases anytime of the day.
The library will also have the ability to individually cater their services to each patron. Instant feedback from library users is provided to help increase patron satisfaction of library services.

Thing 14

The tagging features on the Technorati site allow the user to easily find topics they would enjoy reading. I found several blogs that I like to read using the Technorati site. For example, Technorati includes the newest information on Android phones and its software.

Thing 13

The potential of the Delicious site is limitless. As I researched different tags on the site, I was able to find lesson plans, school supplies, and teacher websites. The tags that are include on the web page, will help organize all the bookmarks I use regularly.
The implementation of social bookmarking sites will increase collaboration. Librarians and teacher can easily share their bookmarks with other teachers and begin discussions with colleagues. The ability to converse with other teachers helps continue collaborations and discussions on new concepts to use in the classroom.
Another plus for this site is the ability to access all of my bookmarks when I buy a new computer. The use of the favorite tab helps to maintain my favorite sites, but when I buy a new computer, I am required to create a new list.

Library Thing

Some of my favorite books.

Thing 12

After researching the different blogs, I found one of the most important rules to follow for commenting on blogs are not to be rude and sarcastic. One of the problems that can occur during blogging, includes the misinterpretation of comments. The author may not intend to write a rude comment, but other bloggers may interpret their comment as such.
The second rule to blogging is to add more to your response than just yes, no, or I agree. Responding with one word answers does not validate the author of the blog. Instead, these short responses may be misinterpreted as being rude.

Thing 11

Creating an account on LibraryThing was fast and easy. I found that I spent a lot of time trying to remember all of the books I have in my personal library. Joining LibraryThing is extremely useful for librarians to display their favorite books as well as participating in networking groups.
I looked at the recommended and the local groups. I found out there are several people in Galveston that share the same interest in books. I was also able to find meetings on book talks at local bookstores.

Thing 10

I enjoyed using the software to create the comic. This site can be used to create comics to promote new books in the library. The comics should be used to highlight a trilogy of books written by a particular author. The web site that contained the magazine generator software is the perfect tool to promote new books or showcases an author in the library.

Thing 9

The search tool that was the easiest for me to find a RSS feed was Technorati. The search tool that was the most confusing was Topix. As I was looking at the site, there were random blogs that were highlighted on the site. On the Topix feed, I found a personal blog one of the blogs contained personal information of a person’s dating blog. I found this very strange. In the Technorati feed, I was able to find information on new technology and the release dates. The site also gave reviews of the newest smart phones.

Thing 8

The five blogs I subscribed to are technology, top stories, US, education and cooking.
One of the major benefits of a RSS or reader is the information I would search for on the internet for hours is contained into one page. I also liked the fact that I could use specific search terms to cater my Google reader. Instead of searching though several newspapers and magazines to find articles that interest me, I will be able to read them through the RSS feed. Teachers can use the RSS feed to tag specific topics he/she may want to include in a lesson.

Thing 7

I created an iGoogle page for my Google account. I have a My Yahoo page for my yahoo account, but I prefer the page I created for my Google account. I am given a larger amount of themes and gadgets to personalize my page. The educational use of the iGoogle page could be used for students to link their school sponsored facebook to the teacher and other students in the class.

I also created a calendar on my Gmail account. One of the best tools of the calendar is the ability to link it to my Droid. I am able to maintain important dates and appointments through my android phone. The educational use of the calendar allows students to maintain due dates for class assignments.

Thing 6

I enjoyed creating the trading card. As a librarian, I could use trading cards to highlight different book covers. The easy of creating each card helps to advertise a larger amount of books.

Thing 4

Register my blog.

Thing 3

Set up a personal blog

Thing 5

I found the information contained in the Flickr to be extremely useful for educators. As I was exploring the site I found the librarian that included links to books that can be purchased on Amazon.com as a another tool the help patrons discover books.

The picture I choose on Flickr showed me of how not to keep a library.

Thing Two

The easiest habit for me to achieve in the 7½ habits is “have confidence in yourself as a competent effective learner”. I see myself as a lifelong learner. I am always searching for new concepts and knowledge on several different subjects. For example, I love watching documentaries. I am fascinated by the information that is contained in documentaries.

The hardest habit would be play. There are times that I forget to ‘stop and smell the roses.’ This is a habit I plan to improve.

Thing One

I enjoyed the information provided on the web site. I look forward to completing this assignment.
